Crookston Grad Brings Her Culture Into the Classroom

From the small country of Nepal, Lhakpa Gurung 2011 was looking for a place to study in the United States and knew she wanted to be a teacher for young children.

“When I knew UMC had the early childhood education program, I really thought, ‘Okay, this is the right school for me,’” she said. After coming to this conclusion, she informed her advisor in Nepal and this was the only school she applied to.

She graduated in May 2011 and began her career in early childhood education. She has been working for the past five years as an early childhood teacher at a small, independent, and progressive school in New York City that has been operating for over 100 years. She loves bringing her culture into the classroom.

“As a teacher you have that power to represent diversity and to give them awareness of other cultures and ethnicities,” said Gurung.
