Ann Hubbard began as the new assistant dean for learning abroad at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities on August 31.
"Ann brings a wealth of experience and talent to the position that will enhance the Learning Abroad Center’s already outstanding national and international reputation," said Meredith McQuaid, associate vice president and dean of international programs.
Ann previously served as vice president and director of university relations for customized programs and academic assessment at AIFS Abroad and as director of study abroad at the University of Saint Thomas for 20 years. She earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota; a master’s from California State University, Northridge; and a Ph.D. in internationalization of higher education from the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan. She also spent an academic year abroad in France.
Ann outlined some of her priorities as assistant dean:
Continue to diversify the programming options and learning modalities: "When I was an undergrad, study abroad was mostly language-focused and generally intended for those planning to work in an international field. Today, there is a better understanding of the transferable skills acquired in learning abroad, and how it benefits students regardless of their major or career aspirations. The types of programs have expanded as well — by offering innovative instructor-led courses, internships, service-learning — and most recently, virtual programs. The field needs to be open to the ways that virtual learning can blend with student mobility across continents, not as an alternative, but to expand the reach of global programs."
Link learning abroad to the Sustainable Development Goals: "We are kicking off an exploration of the ways in which the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals are applicable to both our program learning outcomes and operations in learning abroad. We are in an opportune position to help students link local and global issues by educating ourselves and others to be part of the solution to the climate crisis."
