Chinese Flagship Program Renewed

Established in 2014, the Chinese Flagship Program prepares UMN students to be global professionals fluent in Chinese language and culture. Now, the renewal of the Chinese Flagship Grant will take Chinese language and culture instruction and immersion even further.

Using the Virtual Studio to Create International Connections

Like other courses across the University of Minnesota, Fernando Meza’s Percussion Studio Class had to adapt to an online format when COVID-19 interrupted the semester. Meza is adjusting to the absence of being in the same place by giving students a unique experience: creating international connections for his students in the new virtual environment. 

Choral Connections: South African Songs Meet Minnesota Voices

Every semester the Campus Singers focus on learning music from a wide range of cultures, styles, and periods to perform one concert together. Since 2011, the three choirs have come together for their fall concert called Global Voices. The goal of the concert is to expose Minnesotan singers and audiences to music from around the world.

Josef Woldense, assistant professor in the Department of African American & African Studies and affiliated with the Department of Political Science, researches how dictators maintain power while keeping the regime productive. Specifically, he has been taking a close look at the regime of Ethiopia’s ruler Haile Selassie.
