In a joint statement released on July 26, the U.S. Departments of State and Education announced a “renewed U.S. commitment to international education.” The coordinated policy will include study in the United States by international students, researchers, and scholars; study abroad for Americans; international research collaboration; and the internationalization of U.S. campuses and classrooms.

"The re-emergence of the U.S. on the world stage should inspire all of us who understand the power of international education," said Meredith McQuaid, associate vice president and dean of international programs for the UMN system. "There is so much to gain through more interaction, more debate, more dialogue, and more partnerships with people and institutions around the world. Let us look to the future with hope!"

"The United States cannot afford to be absent from the world stage: U.S. leadership and engagement makes an essential difference abroad, as well as at home. Indeed, in today’s interconnected world, our foreign and domestic policies are inextricably intertwined in pursuit of a preeminent goal – improving the lives of the American people."
